Hunter-Gatherer Fitness in the 21st Century

In today’s world of fast food and long desk hours, it’s not surprising that overweight and obesity rates in the US have hit over 68%, with costs for the care running well into the billions.

The American Journal of Medicine published a study by Drs. O’Keefe, Vogel, Lavie and Cordan detailing the way the human body was designed to be fed and exercised– the way our hunter-gatherer ancestors lived.

How can you get back to your roots and back to fitness? To paraphrase;

1. Hunter-gatherers walked average daily distances of 3- 10 miles– that’s probably at least 3x the amount you’re walking now. Step it up!

2. Long days of hunting were usually followed by a day of rest. Allow yourself time to sleep and recover too.

3. Our ancestors didn’t have sidewalks and even floors– they covered uneven terrain. Mix up your own routine with a walk on the beach.

4. Interval and weight training are essential– each should be performed 2 to 3 times per week.

5. Our ancestors got their movement outside and in a social setting– you’ll enjoy exercise more if you’re enjoying the scenery and the company. Work out buddies are also more likely to keep you sticking to your routine.
